I met some African American women at the hotel yesterday morning. They were in Ghana for professional development and we chatted for a while. One of them told me that she got her hair braided in Kumasi for $4 and microbraid were $10. In the states micros are at least $100. The least I’ve spent is $140. I almost screamed out loud. A lady who worked at the hotel that I met who had my same day name (Afia) told me that her sister could braid my hair. I decided I got too excited about the micros (because I hate taking them out) so instead I got twists. I told just about everyone and most of us got our hair braided. In the US the cornrows many people got and my twists would have been in the neighborhood of 20-30 dollars. I paid $4 for my hairdo and those with cornrows that needed hair was $12. I’m glad we brought the women some business. It was fun.

Christina couldn't get her hair braided because it was too short...
...but she wanted to take a picture anyway.

All of the white girls went through what every Black girl has had to deal with...folks yanking your hair! Holly was tramatized! LOL

I told her that the fire is to melt the weave so it wouldn't come aloose and that its wouldn't burn her hair...
She still freaked out. Haha! It was great.

I took a picture of Allyse getting her hair braided and I showed it to the ladies. One women said “oh too dark” referring to her skin complexion. I almost said something. I wanted to say, “no you are beautiful,” but I didn’t. Not sure why. I almost felt like who am I, this light-skinned obruni telling her to be happy with her color when all of the advertisements are telling her that she isn’t. Part of wishes I would have said something, but there was a reason why the words didn’t leave my mouth. Maybe unknown territory. Maybe I would have struck a nerve.
